iPad/iPhone’s Multitasking Issue. People said, including me, that the lack of multitasking is the biggest flaw in ipad and iphone. But it just suddenly came to my mind, but the fact that iPod app and phone app are the only apps that can run in background in iPhone (and most likely in iPad) does make sense. Why you said?
Let’s start with iPod. We listen to music with ipod. That’s right, we don’t need to interact with ipod while listening to music. That’s why iPod can run in the background. And also for the reason that we all love listening to music while doing something. Next is phone app. Well I think it’s obvious enough why phone app needs to be able to run in background. Then why not other apps too?
Let’s first answer why we need multitasking. One favorite reason is so that we won’t need to go through opening and closing the apps when switching the apps. Then the next question would be what the problem with that is. There are two problems I supposed. First, based on our experience with pcs, opening an app takes a relatively long time. Second, again based on the experience with pcs, if we close an app, most of the time we won’t be taken back to where we left. Actually, the iphone and supposedly also the ipad answer these problems already. iPhone and iPad open and close apps REALLY fast. So we don’t have to worry about the first problem. As for the second problem,iPhone gave the responsibility to app developers. If you had the experience in developing iphone app,you would know that there exists a method that will be called when the app receive the exit signal. And developers can implement this method to save the last state of the app so that it can be restored the next time the app launches. Most of the native iphone apps implement this already like email. So there’s already multitasking, though not obvious. Maybe we can call it pseudo-multitasking?
Then you might argue that multitasking still not there because you cannot chat while browsing at the same time. First, we just don’t chat and browsing at the same time. We cannot. What actually happens is we put the chat app to the front and focus on it. We can do this already in iphone. And as for the notification when new conversation/message arrives, there’s already push notification. Take a look at Yahoo Messenger app. So in my opinion, “multitasking” is there already. Apple just need to add recent apps list. And letting only ipod and phone apps to have the multitasking capability makes sense afterall since multitasking is considered to deteriorate the battery performance and there’s still also memory issue.
So developers, please save the state of app on exit and restore it on launch.
Rumor said that the next iphone os will have the multitasking feature. That would be great since it will save time for developers and I (and many other people out there) won’t whine anymore about this no multitasking thing ^^

Good news and Bad news on IPad. Mr. Jobs delivered something last night (or is it yesterday?) that many people had been waiting for. But it turned out that many people got disappointed by the surprise. Let me share with you some good news and bad news I conceived.
Bad news:
Now, good news.
Less good news than bad news it seems. But worry not! There will always be hackers to solve the bad news just like what they did to iphone ^^ A lil bit obstacles can spice up the life, don’t you think? ^^

ipad is for those who long for an apple and a tablet in cheap price. Like me, yes! ^^ I’ve been longing for a tablet since it looks cool and benri but I can’t stand the price of the likes out there. Most of them are above $1000! So I think ipad fits my needs, almost. Well you can argue that the tablet pcs out there have more hardware power compare to ipad that’s why the price is higher. But like I said, it’s not what I need. Ipad answers all of my most of my needs perfectly in a reasonable price. If I need high hardware power, I have my iMac at home, and a high spec PC in the lab. No need for strong tablet when I walk around.
